Scottsdale: Espresso Flat-Slab Cabinets Grain-Filled and Painted White
Summary
We painted a modern Scottsdale kitchen's dark espresso flat-slab cabinets a clean white. Because the wood grain was open, it had to be filled and sanded first so the slab doors would read smooth.
The challenge
- The flat-slab doors and panels had a dark espresso finish with a pronounced open wood grain.
- On modern slab doors there's no profile to hide texture, so any grain left in the surface would show straight through a white finish.
What we did
- Grain fill and sanding: we filled the open grain and sanded it flat. The process photo shows the filler sitting in the grain while the panel is being machine-sanded.
- Prime and paint: we primed the cabinets and painted them white.
- Doors: sprayed on a hanging rack outdoors.
- Kept in place: the original long bar pulls, the stone counters, and the mosaic backsplash.
The result
Smooth white slab cabinets that look right in a modern kitchen and stand out against the gray mosaic tile and stainless hood. The before and after photos are taken from matching angles.
