Paradise Valley: Interior Doors, Office Built-Ins, and Laundry Cabinets Painted Black

Summary

In a Paradise Valley home, we took stained-wood interior doors, a wall-to-wall office of built-in bookcases and desk cabinetry, and the laundry room cabinets to a deep black.

The challenge

• The office was a large L-shaped built-in: open bookcases, raised-panel upper cabinets, a desk run, and file drawers, all in honey-toned stained wood. There were a lot of shelf edges, panel profiles, and inside corners to cover evenly in a dark color.
• The interior doors were stained wood two-panel doors with arched top panels.
• Dark colors show every flaw, so the surfaces needed careful priming and handling. The crew's notes record checking primed doors closely for scratches before the finish coat.

What we did

• Protection: we masked surrounding walls and openings in plastic and covered the floors.
• Doors: we primed the stained interior doors and painted them black.
• Office built-ins: we painted all of them black, including the shelves, uppers, desk, and drawers.
• Laundry room: the cabinets were also painted black.

The result

The black built-ins turn the office into a dramatic, library-style room against the light oak floor. The black doors give the hallways a crisp, high-contrast look against the white walls.
